Pepsi's Let's Get Together ad users 3 mobile screens at once

This is great - a new Pepsi ad fro Ramadan asks you to put 3 phones next to each other on the table, then plays a film that includes all three screens - effectively making one giant screen.

Apparently this works when the ad is on both Facebook and YouTube.  It's the first time I've seen it done, but I'm sure it won't be the last.  (& we'll all be singing the song by the end of the month)

Full details here

Update - I've now heard how it is done - and it's actually pretty low-tech.

Here is a trailer -

There are three videos.  Friends have to select the right one, put their phones together, and press play simultaneously:

Left video

Middle video

Right video

(Note - only the 'Middle' video has sound)

The view counts are about 200,000 for each, which is some indication of popularity.

Oh - and here is a fan video of the three side by side - which has had over 250,000 views -

Chicken Connoisseur / Crep Connoisseur

So – The Chicken Connoisseur (Elijah Quashie) has started a new channel, Crep Connoisseur

(He always started his chicken shop reviews with a ‘crep check’)

No surprise that he’s starting with a pair of Nikes - He's only ever worn Nikes in his chicken shop reviews.

But – I don't think it's very good (yet)…  It lacks the charm and spark of his original series.

Twitter and Sports Rights

This Twitter Moment from yesterday gives an example of what Twitter is turning into, with their recent sports rights deals - a video platform that is the place to go to catch up (legally) with the latest action.

I'm sure as a twitter poster 99% of my tweets will still be text, links, and pics, but as a twitter user, I'll be watching more and more videos.

Ona Tousun Côté Foot's 'Choose Your Own Adventure' Football Game

Ona Tousun Côté Foot, a football community created by Credit Agricole, the French financial cooperative, who is a sponsor of Euro 2016, has done a lovely little 'choose your own adventure' thing on Twitter, using football vines.

This is the first tweet - you reply with either #Pass or #Run

(Sadly the vines don't seem to work embedded - see it here)

I replied #Run and got this Tweet & vine back:

I then decided to #Dribble - I wasn't going to share the ball - but then got this Tweet and vine back:

Disaster!

What a fun little thing!  Clearly pretty easy to set up, but what a great idea.  If you get all the way through you get a chance to win Euro 2016 tickets.

Facebook 360 Video examples

Facebook has started introducing '360' videos, that let you alter the angle, explore and so on.  Google is also doing it with YouTube, and once Oculus Rift and other devices start to come out expect a lot o more of them.

So far they're a bit clunky (argue this with me in 2 years time...) but they will get better.

Here are two examples -

Star Wars -

MUJI To GO - A story told with products

Muji has created a story told through products.  It starts with people packing for a journey, then follows them to their destination, and then shows why they travelled.

Short clips exist on their website here and also on Instagram.

Ten Years of YouTube - an A-Z

YouTube has produced this to mark their tenth birthday.

Some are obvious - A is for Animals, G is for Gangnam - but M is for Memes, R is for React, and X for Xperiments.

& well done to Old Spice on being the 'O'!

PS - there's something quite magical 1 minute 36 seconds in.

Plus - There's a game to play here - test your knowledge of classic videos

'Hidden Camera' Ads

Last year, one of my trends was borrowed formats - ads that borrow the tropes of TV formats, most notably hidden camera reality formats, for example 'The Big Red Button' and 'The Devil Baby'

Here are a couple of recent examples - an advert for gun control in the US uses a hidden camera to film people's reactions when they hear about the history of the gun they're about to buy

& here's one from the Netherlands, actually made by Lifehunters, a YouTube prank show - art experts (OK, gallery visitors) are asked to assess the value of art prints for sale in Ikea...

Air France's Upgrade Challenge

Economy passengers could play a 'Fruit Ninja'-style game while waiting for their flight at Asian hubs for Air France. - winners got a seat in the new business cabin.

It's a nice stunt, and clearly they had the flexibility only to let people play when there was spare capacity.

But... Just one seat?  So you have to leave your friends behind?

Works with Nest

A video from Google Nest showing examples of things working with the Nest thermostat technology - washing machines, cars and more.

It's a bit reminiscent of the 'things for business travellers and other rich people in the future' sort of videos - see a classic here - but I think that what Nest is trying to do is will be much more mass market soon.

Kidrated - Video Reviews by Kids

A friend Simon, and his partner Natalie, have set up a site and YouTube channel called Kidrated.  It's a site to review London attractions, for kids, by kids.

At present there are 99 videos on the YouTube channel, with more in store to upload in the next few weeks.  The aim is for kids to start making their own - there are tutorials to show you how to - and also 'Mum Reports' where Tiff, the resident mum, reviews things from a parents' perspective.

There are even short film reviews:

The site came about because Simon realised how much of his son's online use use video, and how his son and his friends would rather watch videos than any other sort of content.  (This also ties in with research that I took part in for Tremor Video last summer).

The other thing I like about it is that it's a great example of a local niche site, albeit a very big niche.

Good luck Simon - let's see this take off!

"Time to f**k with some customers"

There's a new Carrie film coming out apparently...

This has had 35m views in 7 days.  Just part of the trend towards using hidden camera TV formats for ads (see also 'red button in Belgian market square' and lots more)

McDonalds #MightyWings campaign across different platforms

I'm sure this must have been done before, but the McDonalds #MightyWings campaign is a good example of a campaign running across multiple digital platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram & YouTube.

The story is that someone has stolen a box of #MightyWings - but who..?

Examples:

YouTube

Twitter

Facebook

'How-To' Videos

Video is eating the world, as the saying goes.  Video is one of the most popular things that people do online, over 100 hours are uploaded to YouTube every minute (& YouTube is only eight years old), and so on.

Companies are now using short videos as ways of communicating things they would have done in text previously, and completely beyond traditional advertising.  We've seen great examples of this from Lowe's...

& from NatWest...

& I'm sure this will grow.  Look at the sort of content that LifeHacker is now putting up on YouTube -

This one on how to pack a suitcase

& also this life-changing (I'm nearly serious) video on how to eat a chicken wing.

I think that this could soon be a new land-grab; something that the smartest brands will want to own.

Update - this from ASOS

& this from Samsung - not really 'how to' but a long product demo

Oreos have also got some nice ones, for example

'6 Fruits You're Eating Wrong'

Airbnb's 'Hollywood & Vine' competition

Another very creative use of Vine.  Airbnb are going to make a full length movie six seconds at a time, by asking their Twitter followers to make individual segments.

& with this vine:

Nice!

NatWest's Student Tips on Vine

Today British bank NatWest has bought the promoted trend #UniProof on Twitter to promote their studen accounts (yesterday was the day British students received their A Level results, meaning that many now know whether they can go to university or not).

As you can see from these Vines, they're taking the 'Top Tips' approach, also used by Lowe's the US DIY chain - see earlier post here.

It's great that we're now starting to see so many really creative uses of Vine.  I knew it would catch on!

How videos go viral on Twitter

There's a good piece on the Twitter blog about how 3 videos went viral on their site.

The three they look at are Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal, NASA's Space Oddity, and Bodyform's Real Beauty Sketches.

I think 'Ryan Gosling is the most interesting, because it was on Vine, and so will have been almost entirely spread by Twitter.  It's interesting that it was seeded out to two very popular accounts Best Vines Ever and Vine Loops, and then people re-shared from them - see a video of the spread below:

At the end of the post they produce these 4 conclusions:

"1. Twitter users love video
Tweets containing video have strong engagement rates, with 42% likely to retweet, reply, or mention brand Tweets that contain a fun or interesting video.

2. Videos are easily shareable
Videos integrate seamlessly into a Tweet, and every Tweet is instantly shareable. Make sure you devise a hashtag to organise the conversations around the video campaign and messages.

3. Promoted products amplify your reach
Use Promoted Tweets and Trends to help surface and amplify your message. Combine with interest and keyword targeting to hit the right audience.

4. Get creative with Vine
Vine lets you create six-second looping videos that are instantly shareable on Twitter. And if you really love it you can Re-vine!"

Best Vines - a 'Fast Show' for YouTube

I know that there are lots of these videos out there, but this is a great compilation, effectively a Fast Show for YouTube, with more ideas in a minute that almost any other YouTube video, and a very high hit rate.
